A New Care Model: The Household Model
There are many retirement communities to choose from, and at times, it can be difficult to find the right one for you or a loved one. Research, scheduling visits, and planning can feel repetitive and monotonous because the care models in retirement communities are almost always the same. They typically offer hospital or facility-like care, with separate rooms, strict schedules and a heavy health care focus. But what if this isn’t the kind of care model you’re looking for? In recent years, Action Pact, a culture change company, has introduced a different model of care that changes the way people have traditionally approached rehabilitation, skilled nursing, assisted living and other levels of senior care. They’ve created a model called the “Household Model” that refocuses the goal of successful aging and recovery in senior care.
The Household Model in the New Rehabilitation Center
The Household Model comprises of groups of 16 to 22 residents who live together in what is known as a ‘household.’ Each resident has his or her own apartment with a bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen, while also sharing additional common living spaces with other residents.
The Household Model will be offered in the brand-new dedicated rehabilitation building at Wesley Place on Honeysuckle, formerly known as Wesley Manor. This type of rehabilitation will be highly sought after by seniors who prefer to live temporarily in a household that feels more like home while they are undergoing rehabilitation prior to returning to their house.
Households allow residents to have privacy in their own apartment when they want, as well as easy access to their favorite activities. Residents are a short walk away from playing a game of chess, watching movies with friends, or sharing a meal with others. Staff members also spend time in the household building relationships with residents and helping with regular home maintenance.
Because the Household Model allows residents the freedom to continue the lifestyle they have lived all their lives, there is an easier transition between levels of care, and no pressure to fit into a structured schedule.
Skilled Nursing and Assisted Living Care Model
The Household Model in Skilled Nursing abolishes the facility-like feel often found in more traditional Skilled Nursing centers, and instead fosters feelings of living at home. It takes a person-centered approach, and emphasizes interpersonal relationships and personal decision-making, rather than focusing only on the health care aspect.
This model allows residents to wake up when they want, eat when they want, participate in campus events as they choose, and carry on with their daily lives just as they would in their current house, with the additional benefits of Skilled Nursing care.
Other varieties of the Household Model will be available at Wesley Place on Honeysuckle, in newly renovated Assisted Living apartment homes and newly appointed living spaces.
