“Everybody has a passion for something. I have a passion for helping people,” says Carolyn Brown, Life Enrichment Mentor at Wesley Place on Honeysuckle, a retirement community located in Dothan, Alabama.
Carolyn has been helping seniors at Wesley Place on Honeysuckle for nearly 23 years. She started as a housekeeper and after only three months, became the interim activities coordinator. From there, she moved up to assistant director of activities, and then became the director of activities and a life enrichment mentor. As the community has transitioned to incorporate the Household Model, her duties have also expanded to include managing a household.
“My favorite part of my job is the impact that I have on residents every day,” says Carolyn. “I make them laugh, and I cannot go a day without laughing. We want to make them smile.”
Carolyn is always thinking about how to make the residents happy, and plans many of the events that residents look forward to each month. Some of the favorite activities include arts and craft events, birthday celebrations, trivia and games, dances, musical performances and special dinners.
Carolyn also works to coordinate pet therapy, another significant part of the lives of residents at Wesley Place on Honeysuckle. Staff members often bring their dogs to the community, bringing joy to residents and allowing them to connect with the animals.
Activities and events play a large part in the enjoyment that residents have living at Wesley Place on Honeysuckle, and Carolyn is often the one to thank for making these events a reality. “You have to have a special ministry, a special place in your heart to do this work,” says Carolyn. “This is something that requires love.”
