Looking for a retirement community can be a daunting task for any family, but Chuck and Donna Barnard had an extra challenge ahead of them. Four members of their family were looking for a retirement community where they could all enjoy life together: Chuck’s parents, Chuck (Sr.) and Wanda Barnard, as well as Donna’s mother and brother, Myrtis Tew and Micki.
Chuck Jr. remembers, “We looked at Wesley Place on Honeysuckle because you had many different levels of care.” In fact, out of the five levels of care offered all on one campus at the Dothan retirement community, at least one Barnard and Tew family member has experienced that level of care, including inpatient rehabilitation at The Rehab Inn!
Chuck and Donna attended an Estate Planning and Elder Law seminar by local attorney Nick Shimoda at Wesley Place on Honeysuckle in 2015, and shortly thereafter three of their family members moved to a local assisted living community. Donna’s brother Micki went to live with her and Chuck Jr., but a few years later, Micki was also in need of the extra care and attention of a retirement community.
“I had been praying for about 4 years for a place that they could all be together,” explained Donna. She and her husband chose Wesley Place on Honeysuckle because it was the only assisted living community in the city that offered an apartment for married couples, and all four family members moved into the community a few months ago. Donna beamed, “My mom and Micki could visit each other every day, even eat and do activities together.”
This arrangement has also made it much easier for Donna and Chuck to visit and keep tabs on their family. Donna complimented, “The staff and nurses have been wonderful, so helpful and kind. They smile and know our names!”
